Mike Carroll
Head Coach who specializes in special units, not offensive or defensive?
There was a head coach whos specialty was the special teams and not particularly offense or defense? like what I am saying is the guys are like Bill Cowher, Tony Dungy, Nick Saban, Pete Carroll's defensive coaches on the mind as coaches like John Grudden, Mike Holmgren, Mike Leach, Chris Peterson coaches are offensive mind. But has their been a sort of coach who sat on the fence and specialized in special teams?
Is an interesting question. He is a career in coaching that usually starts on the offensive side and defensive ball. For example, a coach can start as coach of the corner, then go to the DB coach (with responsibility for the posts both safety and corner), then switch to defensive coordinator assistant and defensive coordinator and, finally, the head coach. At any time during this process, it may have some involvement in task forces. Maybe he is the deputy coordinator of Defence and also charge of special teams. Ron Zook, for example, was the defensive coordinator of Florida, and was proposed to manage teams special (to make room for Bob Stoops I think), then became special teams coach for the Saints NO, then became head coach Florida. I think that the qualifications to be a head coach require that candidates are experienced in managing a side of the ball top to bottom. This means they have a history in the development of plans hit game, players develop successful screening of good recruits / conscripts, and winning games. I do not think that you meet these requirements in today's game, simply by focusing on units special and nothing else. There are several head coaches who focus on special teams. Frank Beamer VA Tech and Urban Meyer to Florida come to mind. Coach Meyer personal coaches special teams in Florida. He believes special teams to be the first stage of what he calls "a good defense." This means that, in his opinion winning position on the ground by the play of special teams is a essential to a good defensive team. He feels so strongly about this that gives special privileges team units that are not available other players. They get the first served during meals team by example. He has more offensive and defensive starters playing on special teams. Players bust their nuts to get the team kick coverage. His background is as a coach and graduate assistant position on the offensive side the ball until it is put in charge of special teams, I think Notre Dame. He then obtained employment in Bowling Green and HC the rest is history. Since he assumed full responsibility for coaching special teams throughout his career head coach, I guess that makes him a good candidate as you'll find for a "specialist task forces to head coach." I have no doubt that there are other examples of coaches who could qualifiy as "experts of the task" but I am more familiar with Florida so that everything you do from me.
